On a recent Security Now (a podcast from the TWiT network, if anyone doesn't know) the hosts talked about the safety of old computers running operating systems. They argued that a system using an out of date operating system such as Windows 98, or soon to be 2000, could be more secure than a modern operating system with the latest security patches.

The reason they say unsupported systems are more secure is that nobody writes programs to harm older computers. If you are going to hack someone, it makes more sense to write a program to get information from someone who can afford a newer operating system, and at the same time be able to impact the largest number of machiens possible. This makes writing a program to impact the most widely used OS (which would most likely be the latest) the wisest decision.
