The smithing guide

Smithing is a f2p skill that depends on mining. With smithing you make bars from ores and weapons and armor from bars. It is profitable if you know what you are doing.

Smithing is divided into 2 parts, smelting, where you convert your ores into bars and forging, where you use bars to make armor for instance.

To smith a bar simply click on the furnace and choose which bars you want to smith.
Gold and silver bars are used in Crafting.

 Smithing the bars into something useful

Now you have the bars, but with them you can't do much, so grab a hammer, some metal bars you've made and head to a nearby anvil (anvils near varrock west bank are the best).

Now, if you have some metal bars and a hammer in your inventory, use one bar with the anvil. You will see smithing interface like that one above.
Names in white means you have the level to make that item, names in black means you do not have the level to make that item. Next to a picture of the item you will see the amount of bars needed. If written in green, means you have the needed amount of bars to make that, If in red, means you haven't got the needed amount of bars, kinda obvious.

 If you want to become a pro-smither...

Smithing is one of the hardest skills to raise once you are above level 50.
There are many ways to level up your smithing. Here is a guide that tells you what to do from 1 to 99

1. If you just started i suggest you to mine/buy tin and copper.
once you have +- 200 of each, smith them into bars and make weapons out of it. When you made bunch of weapons, sell them into the general store for some extra cash.
:!: OR do the knight sword quest, if completed you get 12,500 exp, that is enough to get you from 1 to 29 level smithing

2. Always smith the best thing you can.

3. Continue smithing until you reach level 30. Now you are able to make steel bars. There are lot's of option you have:

a. If you have High mining level, mine coal and iron
b. If you have enough cash, buy coal and iron
c. Continue with smithing iron until you can make steel plates

4. Now, if you chose for a or b, forge iron and coal and make steel bars. You can sell them at high profit or use them to smith some weapons/armor. I suggest selling 50% of your bars and smith the other half.

5. If you are a member you can smith iron with 100% success if you have a ring of forging. This is very interesting because iron ores are cheap and easy to mine. In mine opinion you can smith iron plates util you get level 70
:!: OR if you have access to crafting gauntlets you can reach level 99 with making gold bars (56.25 exp, that is more than runite bar!).

5b. If you are a member you can make big profit if smithing cannon balls and sell them (+-200gp profit per bar)

6. Now continue smithing until you can make full mithril. That can be sold to players for a tiny profit.

7. Smith until you can make full sets or armor and selling them for a bit of profit or smith gold bars with carfting gauntlets 'till you reach level 90-91, here you can make hatchets wich can be sold for +-2k profit.
--remember, almost any kind of runite weapons can be sold for profit
