Start the quest by speaking with Brimstail in the cave located southwest of the Gnome Stronghold.

Quests needed: The Grand Tree
Skills needed: Lvl 46 magic, lvl 5 Construction (lvl 13 Runecrafting, lvl 45 woodcutting)
Items used: Watchtower teleport, Varrock teleport, bucket, knife, pestal and mortar, hammer, saw, maple logs, oak logs and a mud rune.

1. Talk to Brimstail and ask him about his pet. After that ask about his research of Magic. Ask him about the history of magic, and he will tell about Glouphrie. Brimstail tells you that you need to investigate the cave next door. Investigate the machine standing there and examine the crystal bowl.

2. Go back to ask Brimstail more about the machine. He says that he doesn't know but he does know somebody that knew the builder of it. Time to go to Hazalmere. (Hazalmere is located east of Yanille)

3. After you talked to Hazalmere, you get a really interesting vision of what happened back in the old days. After his story he will give you a crystal disc. You now have to return to brimstail and tell him that the machine was an anti-illusion device.

4. Talk to brimstail to tell you about the machine. In the mean time the machine is getting smashed by an invicible gnome. You now have to examine how bad the damage is.

5. To repair the machine, you need maple logs, oak logs and some magical glue. Get the maple logs and oak logs from trees. Go for the magical glue to varrock and use a knife on any tree. Make sure you also got a bucket in your inventory, because you need something to keep it in.

6. Next take a water talisman, some pure essence and some water runes of your bank and go to the earth altar to craft some mud runes (Don't click on the altar. Use your water talisman on it! Binding necklace helps doing this). Crush your mud rune with a pestal and mortar and use it on your bucket of sap to get magical glue. Get back to cave with a saw, hammer, maple logs, oak logs and your glue to fix the machine.

7. If you check the front of the machine you will see a number. This number is for everyone different. In the beginning you get a indigo pentagon (5 corners) disc. If you look on the sign next to it you see that indigo is color #6 so that indigo disc is worth 5*6 = 30. If you use it on the left most machine you can change it for something else. For example 2 yellow pentagons (3*5+3*5=30). Go to Brimstail to get some more discs and change and change till you found the number you need to open it. Note: A circle has only 1 corner.

8. Once you opened the front of the machine there will be another panel with three locks. Talk to Brimstail again to get even more discs and change them till you get enough. Note: the second and third slot needs 3 discs to unlock, you don't need to change till you get 1 disc that gives that number.

9. After you solved the puzzle, you find out that the cute creatures are not that cute. Go to the king to tell what happened. He orders you to kill of the creatures. They got a magnificent 1 hp each so you just need to find them all.

1) Next to the king
2) Just outside the grand tree
3) Near the spirit tree
4) Near the entrance
5) North of the swamp near the Toroises
6) Top of the grand tree

10. Talk to the king again after you killed them all to complete this quest. He talks about a new problem they have to deal with. But since you're now truly a hero you get a Small Crystal Seed that's passed down the generations. To unlock the Crystal seed go back to the cave with the crystal bowl.

Nice guide, Southrend.
I finished the quest about an hour ago. I thought the reward was pretty good, but like Creepy, I don't see much use in the saw other than it being a saw..seems Jagex are trying to make Construction popular so we can waste our money again :P

yea the saw kinda seems silly. A normal saw did nothing special .... whats the catch for the crystal saw?

The crystal saw is actually a really good item. If you have it in your inventory you get a +3 in construction for items you need a saw to make.

That's what I heard at least.

It gives a boost of 3 lvls. I heard you can make 25 things with it before it turns back into a crystal seed.
