Please refer to the date of the guide - it is obviously outdated. I do not recommend use of this as an actual guide as it is a submission. Of course, it will be updated, corrected, and polished when the guides go official. The Fishing Guide Originally written by Thief18954 on November 8th 2005, last edited February 19th 2006.Updated and improved by Warren on March 18, 2007. Thanks to Trekkie, Gontcha, The Blue Men, Flare Ember, atheism_rule, Alex 43, Red Rooste5 and The Haysta for information and suggestions. MADE FOR USE ON http://WWW.RSBANDB.COM ONLYNote: * = Members only. Intro Fishing is an essential skill. You need fish to heal while fighting in combat. You need fish to train the cooking skill well. Fishing is pretty simple. Bring the required fishing tool to fishing area, click, and get watch your character do all the work and have fish fill up your inventory. Fishing costs hardly any money and can be a good way to actually gain some money. Fishing is a free to play (F2P) and member (P2P) skill.
This guide covers most things about the fishing skill. You learn about the tools you will be using, all the locations you can fish at, the fish you will be fishing, what is recommended to fish, prices of fish, the location of fishing shops, random events you will encounter during fishing, level boosting items, the skill cape, and the trawler mini game.Tools The Small Net The Small Net is the first tool you'll be using. And luckily you won't be using it that much, until you reach level 62. You should have a fishing net from Tutorial Island, but if you have lost it you can buy it at various fishing shops around the world for 5 coins. What you can do with the small net is basically catch the most basic of fish, shrimps. At level 15, you have the ability catch anchovies along with those shrimps. Once level 33 you can fish giant frog spawns in the Lumbridge Swamp Caves. But why would you? Most people have never even heard of these. At level 62 fishing you will be able to fish *monkfish. These are the preferred (and one of the fastest) fish to achieve level 99 with. During the *Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest you catch *Karambwanji as bait to catch *Karambwan. Karambwanji requires level 5 fishing to catch.
The Bait Rod
You will be using this more than the Small Net at lower levels. You use this new tool at level 5 to catch sardines. Level 10 unlocks the ability to catch herring alongside the sardines. You can't catch sardines or herring in a river. To really use the bait rod, you must have bait. You can find these in the local fishing shops or bait can also be found from drops from zombies. Each fish you catch with the bait rod subtracts one piece of bait from your inventory. You can also use this at level 25, where you can catch pike. You can only catch pike in a river. At level 28 you can go to *Mort Myre Swamp or *Lumbridge Swamp Caves to fish the *slimy eel, and at level 38 you can catch the *cave eel in the Lumbridge Swamp Caves. But you probably never will. The bait fishing rod costs 5 coins at a fishing shop.
During the *Fishing Contest Quest you fish a *giant carp with the bait rod. You use red vine worms as bait. This is only fishable during the quest.
The Fly Fishing Rod
One of the fastest ways of powering experience in fishing and you just don't know it yet. Here, you can use the fly fishing rod at level 20 and at level 30 . At level 20 you can catch trout and at level 30 you are able to catch salmon. Level 38 brings in the *rainbow fish. This requires stripy feathers instead of normal feathers. They are collected hunting *tropical wagtails. (bird snaring, level 19 hunting) Using the fly fishing rod requires feathers. Feathers and the fly fishing rod can be bought at a local fishing shop for 3 coins each. You can kill chickens as an alternative of collecting feathers, as they drop them often. They drop them in quantities of 5, 10, or 15. The fly fishing rod costs 5 coins at a fishing shop.
The Harpoon
Here, you are introduced to tunas at level 35. At level 40 you may leave your harpoon behind for 10 levels and go onto lobsters. You won't need the harpoon again until level 50, unless you continue to fish tuna. At level 50, you get to fish for the best F2P food there is, the swordfish. They are caught along with tunas, so you won't catch as many swordfish as you did tunas in the long run. When you reach level 76 you gain the ability to catch *sharks. Well done. These are great for money and great food against tough monsters, healing 20 hitpoints. A downside to catching sharks is that they are very slow. The harpoon costs 5 coins at a fishing shop.
*The Barb-Tailed Harpoon
Another harpoon is the barb-tailed harpoon. This harpoon is wieldable so you will be able to get one extra fish per inventory. Well, it adds up. It requires level 35 fishing to equip. To obtain it, you will go out hunting for the barb-tailed kebbit because it is the creature that drops it. This requires level 33 hunting to hunt, is located in the jungle hunting region, and is hunted with deadfall traps.
The Lobster Cage
Level 40 fishing required. There is only one fish available with the lobster cage. Can you guess what it is? Hopefully you answered lobsters, because that is what the fish is. The lobster cage costs 20 coins at a fishing shop.
*The Big Net
You never really use the big net after level 40. But it serves as a nice way to get seaweed, since you are able to catch seaweed with a big net. At level 16, you have the ability to catch mackerel, oysters (which may contain pearls for bolts if your lucky), caskets (these contain random items that the Mysterious Old Man can give you), and seaweed (used for making glass items in crafting skill). Next up is the cod which you can catch at level 23. And lastly, you can catch the Bass at level 46. Occasionally when fishing with the big net you might get lucky and catch random junk, such as leather boots! (What luck, eh?) The big net costs 20 coins at a fishing shop.
*Oily Fishing Rod
Yet another rod, but this time it is different. To attain this, you must have started Heroes Quest, and you receive it during the quest. This rod is used to catch lava eels. They can be found in a Taverly Dungeon Lava River. South of the Blue Dragons, where there is a bunch of baby blue dragons. This isn't much of a fishing training spot, but it's a fun challenge to say the least. During the Heroes Quest you go to the Port Sarim fishing shop and talk with the store owner. You ask about fishing lava eels and you will receive some Blamish Snail Slime. Mix the slime with a harralander in a vial of water and use the resulting product on a normal fishing rod. Ta-da, you have an oily fishing rod.
*The Vessel
This you can gain access to during the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest. It allows you to catch karambwan. However, to really use this, you must have bait, the bait this time is called karabwanji. You must fill the vessel with a karabwanji each time you catch a karambwan. This isn't a fast way to be fishing, but it's more of a challenge. Plus, you only need 65 Fishing to catch them and they heal 18 hitpoints. Which is pretty good. Slow, but good. If you've thrown away your vessel, I'm sure Tiadeche in Tai Bwo Wannai Village would be happy to sell you one.
Note: To properly cook Karambwan, you will need to have completed the quest Tai Bwo Wannai Trio, or else whenever you cook them, the fish will be poisonous, which will kill you eventually.Locations My goal was to get all of the fishing spots in RuneScape. I know it is kind of pointless, but if you know of any I missed, tell me. I know Hemenster, ScapeRune Island, and Tutorial Island are missing.

* = A members only fish.Recommended Path
Level 1-20
You can only fish one thing at level 1, shrimp. So it is what I suggest you fish, since you cant fish anything else. Dranyor Village would be the best place to fish these, but unless your over level 17 combat, watch out for the dark mage. Bring a small fishing net. At level 15 you get to catch anchovies with your shrimp, continue fishing with a small net at Dranyor. You can either bank, drop, or make a fire and cook your fish.
Level 20-40
Seeing as you can now fish trout, why not go to Barbarian Village (or *Shilo Village if you can) and fish some? Your going to need a fly fishing rod and a bunch of feathers. At level 30 your going to be catching salmon along side the trout. You can cut down a tree, light a fire, and cook your fish or just drop it if your at Barbarian Village. Unless you want the fish for training, don't bank it. In Shilo Village you might as well bank it, since the bank is so close.
Level 40-62
Head off to *Catherby beach. Your going to be fishing lobsters. Since your fishing lobsters, you will need a lobster cage. You can bank them and cook or sell them later, or cook them on the range beside the bank and store them to be sold or used for training combat. If your a F2P and want to fish lobsters, you will have to go to Karamja Island. There you can light a fire, cook the lobsters, and sell them to the general store, or just sell them raw to the store. You can bank them if you wish, but the nearest bank is Dranyor Village and is far away. You will need 30 coins to get to Karamja Island and an additional 30 coins to get back to Port Sarim. For fastest XP and not potential profit, stick with fly fishing.
Level 62-99
*Monkfish. These are really fast XP, fishing faster than lobsters and giving more XP than sharks. And you can make money selling them. They are good for training combat, because they heal 16 hitpoints. Your going to need to do the *Swan Song quest if you want to fish them though. The bank is really close so you don't have to drop your fish. If you are unable to get Swan Song completed and want fast XP, continue fly fishing in *Shilo Village, or Barbarian Village if you are a non member.Pricing Prices can change at anytime so these may not be current!Type of Fish | Price Raw | Price Cooked | Lobster | 220 GP | 200 GP | Monkfish | 300 GP | 280 GP | Shark | 850 GP | 750 GP |

Fishing Related Random Events
Big Fish
The Big Fish is an annoying little pest that likes to take your fishing tool and throw it somewhere else. These are rather annoying but you'll get used to them. Just pick up your tool and go back to fishing.
Whirlpools
These appear randomly at any time. The point of these is to take your fishing tool and just take it for good. Be careful of these. You'll have to find another tool when you get your tool sucked in. Don't fish in a whirlpool, find another spot.
River Trolls
What skill wouldn't be perfect without the random enemy? This little bugger becomes pests for most fishers. Allot of people can die right on the spot if they aren't looking, making fishing an "active" skill. When you get the level 120 and 159 River Trolls, you should be either really good, or have the Protection from Melee prayer, or be a coward and run away. They can drop random stuff involving fishing or other stuff. Such as tools, bait, even sharks! (A side-note: If you have a slayer task of trolls, killing one of the river trolls counts towards your task, but I don't suggest you try to kill them for an assignment.)
Evil Bob
Evil Bob, the Jagex Cat's evil twin appears and kidnaps you taking you to ScapeRune Island. Talk to the lady servant and she will tell you which side of the Island the fish Evil Bob likes is located. Fetch one of the nets scattered along the beach and fish in the fishing spot. You will catch a cooked fish. However, Evil Bob doesn't like cooked fish. So what do you do? You uncook it! There is a cold fire right beside you to uncook it on. Feed it to him and he may fall asleep, allowing you to escape through the portal. But if he doesn't you will have to repeat the process.
Level Boosters
*The Fishing Potion
This potion requires level 50 herblore to make. This potion raises your fishing skill 3 levels. This helps you to enter the Fishing Guild when you are at level 65 Fishing. Or they can also be used when you are at level-73 so you can fish sharks. Other than that they aren't any other uses I can really think of about it. As with all potions, you drink a dose at a time. When made they have 3 doses, but can be mixed with another fishing potion to get 4 doses.
*Admiral Pie
This pie requires level 70 cooking to create. This pie raises your fishing skill 5 levels. You then will be able to enter the Fishing Guild at level 63 fishing and fish sharks at 71 fishing. To make it you need flour and water. You mix it into pastry dough and then put it into a pie dish. Cook a tuna and salmon and throw it in the pie dish. Place a raw potato in the dish with the fish and cook it. As with all pies, you eat one half at a time. It heals 8.
*Trawler
Level 15 fishing is required. To start the mini-game talk to Murphy on the Port Khazard docks. This is the only place to catch sea turtles (level 79) and manta rays (level 81). You can also catch the regular fish from it. Each round of the trawler bring 50 swamp paste, 10 ropes, and some bailing buckets. You buy bailing buckets from the Port Khazard general shop. To gather swamp paste, go to Lumbridge Swamp and collect the swamp tar there. Mix the tar with flour and cook it on a range or fire. You will also need a team of people. Get on the boat and the mini-game will start. If you see a leak in the boat, click on it to fill it with swamp paste. To get rid of the water from the leaks, just click on a bailing bucket. To get rid of the water from the bucket, click it again. If you see that your net is ripped, climb up the ladder and click on the net, using one rope to fix it. This will go on for 10 minutes, or until the boat sinks. If it sinks, click on a barrel. You will be brought to Port Sarim and will have to go all the way back to play it again. If you make it through, inspect the net when its over to get your catch. I don't recommend this for fish because you get hardly anything, but in the Behind the Scenes March 07, Jagex said they are going to improve this. We will see.
*Fishing Achievement Cape
After thousands of fish, spending hours fishing, you will eventually achieve 99 fishing. You then can purchase this cape for 99k from the Master Fisher outside of the fishing guild. This will give you a nice emote.
